LXXXIII
The scribe has not been identified, and the origin of the manuscript is
unknown. Einar G. Pétursson records that it came from Pétur Halldórsson,
who died in Knarrarhöfn (near Hvammur).
The title of the saga is ‘Sagan af. | Mírmant Jalli í Sikiley. | ok Setselju
hinni Vænu.’ The opening words are ‘Á dögum Klements páfa í Róm réð’ etc.
The last word of each verso is repeated as the first of the following recto, but
neither is given any prominence. The chapters are indicated with ‘i. Kap.’, ‘ij.
Kap.’ etc., in a distinct script, but placed at the beginning of the line; the text
follows immediately, and except in the first instance, it is written no larger
than usual. There are twenty-one chapters, in the same places as in 633
(above, p.LXiu) and related manuscripts, including Hd, from which this text
appears to be derived.
Hv has all of the variants listed for Hd above, pxxxxi, the only change
being that (like other texts also thought to be derived from Hd) it has ‘sjáfar’
(“sea”) not ‘Sjáfar’ (meant as a place-name?) at 54‘5. It also agrees with Hd in
other slight variants not listed. Very rarely does Hv agree with a text ante-
cedent to Hd (i.e 395), and all the instances are without significance. For ex-
ample, at 1263 ‘med mikilli hprmvng’ appears in Hd as ‘med allri hörmúng’
(which is repeated in other texts derived from Hd); Hv has ‘með mikilli hörm-
úng’, but this can be seen as an innovation in Hv which happens to bring it
back into agreement with 395.
The following are examples of innovations in Hv.
