Akurevri is the higgest town in North
Iceland. An ancient town with
a modern look, now a centre.of
industrv, trade and tourism. It is built
on a long tongue of land extending
into the end of Eyjatjördur (wThe
Fiord of Islands”) and Iies amid
beautiful surroundtngs between high
mountain ranges. It was here that the
clergyman Jón Sveinsson (NONNl),
famous author, lived, and Akureyri
has preserved his memorv in a small
museum devoted to him. Here the
visitor will fínd good accommodation
and friendly service. Akureyri
has comforiable hotels and
pleasant restaurants, a golf course, an
outdtKtr swimming-pool, a sauna, and
a famous hotanical garden.
Only 1(K) km (60 miles) awav is Lake
Myvatn. one of the most beautiful
districts of Iceland with its unspoilt
nature, peaceful mountains, trout-
fishing, weird lava formations, water-
falls, hot water and sulphur springs.
In summer tourists can enjoy the real
Midnight Sun in Akureyri, while in
winter they can relax in the new
ski-hotel at Hlídartjall with its
wonderful views and all nnxlern
amenities, including a ski-lift
and ski -instructors.
