school library in a catholic school and she was offered a
position as a technical adviser at the University of
Trujillo. However the day before her contract was to take
effect an earthquake of 8.2 degrees on Richter-scale
killed 60.000 people in Peru. Sigrún’s future working
place was demolished. In 1971 she left Peru alone and
came home to Iceland where she started a new life.
Six months after her arrival in Iceland she was
offered the new position of a school library director to
develop school libraries for the city of Reykjavík. In
1975 she also became assistant professor of library
science at the University of Iceland where she has been
working since, the first years as the only full time faculty
member. In 1985 she was promoted to an associate
professor.
She has been responsible for developing the educa-
tional program for the future librarians of Iceland and her
work in developing school libraries led her to inter-
national work. Sigrún joined Standing Committee for
School Libraries within the IFLA, Intemational Fede-
ration for Library Association, and she has attended
many intemational conferences where she has given
papers. In 1978 she participated in organization of a
seminar on the education of school librarians in Costa
Rica. She translated the lectures from Spanish to English
and edited the English IFLA-edition.
Sigrún married again and has a son, bom in 1974.
Her husband died in 1979. On January 23rd 1987 she
successfully defended her doctoral dissertation at the
University of Chicago and was the first Icelander to
receive a doctoral degree in librarianship.

A paper presented at the 16th IASL conference in
Reykjavík, July 30th, 1987. (Revised and abrídged.)
The MISLIP project was planned and carried out in
the years 1983-1987 in Scotland. Six schools
participated in the second phase in 1985-1987. The
project followed on from much research on information

microcomputer as an information tool.
The broad aims of the project were:
