BÓKASAFNIÐ Sólveig Þorsteinsdóttir: The Natlonal Hospital - Medical Libraiy- page 43 The Medical Library of the National Hospital moved into a new location in November 1986. The library now occupies 485 square meters, but will in the next two years get 500 square meters in additional space. The library is now on two floors. In the basement there is the periodical collection and a readingroom for 44 people. The books, current periodicals and the information and reference area are located on the first floor. The staff is four librarians and two assistants. The stock is about 5.000 books and 400 current periodicals. The opening hours are weekdays, from 8.00 to 22.00, and Saturdays, from 9.00 to 17.00. (SÞ) Kristín Geirsdóttir: The National Power Company’s Library and Information Center- page 44 Two years ago The National Power Company hired a librarian to establish a special library and information center and be in charge of records management. The National Power Company builds and operates power plants in Iceland. Staff size is approximately 260, with about 60 people in Reykjavík. It was decided to integrate the information service in one information center at the head office in Reykjavík. The ncw center was formally opened on November 1 lth 1987. It houses the company’s technical drawings, maps, audiovisual material, semiactive records, archives, reports collection and conventional special library material. The collection is mainly literature in the fíelds of electric engineering, hydrology and business administration. (KG) Stefanía Júlíusdóttir: Information servlces of public libraries to business and industiy - page 45 A short account is given of research on and experiments with information services of public libraries to business and industry abroad. A description is given of those parties in Iceland, that should participate in a nationwide information system serving the information needs of business and industry as well as individuals. Those parties being: various research institutes, the National Research Council, the Information Service of the National Research Council, the industrial consultants, the public library system, research libraries, special libraries and others. Besides that an online bibliographic databank needs to be established, where the holdings of all major Icelandic libraries are recorded and searchable online throughout the country. A committee is presently working on establishing such a databank. The organization of this information service has to be such that it can be recorded and indexed in an online databank accessible throughout the country. This databank would enable those working on information services, to see where to find the needed information. (SJ) Lárus Zophoníasson: The Publlc Libraiy in Akureyri - page 51 Last year (1987) the Public Library in Akureyri was celebrating its 160th anniversary. The library in Akureyri is now one of three libraries and the only public library in the country that receives a free copy of everything published in Iceland, according to law. This is of great importance for the library. On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the town of Akureyri the town’s council decided to enlarge the present library building, which is now 20 years old. As many public libraries in Iceland the library in Akureyri has had a decline in circulation during the last years but it seems to the author that this is changing now for the better. (AT) Kristín H. Pétursdóttir: Records and Informatlon Management - page 52 The information age demands of us that we pay even greater attention to the management of our information resources. Paper records are still with us but new records media are gaining ground. The walls between libraries and archives are coming down and we see more and more institutions where the words library, archives, librarian, archivist are misnomers. The article describes the concept and development of Records Management, and the difference between RM and Archives Administration. People working in RM everywhere have a very varied educational background and discussions on educational requirements have been heated. Because of this and because of the very rapid developments in the field of information work, close cooperation is urgently needed. Suggestions are made as to the areas and form of cooperation within RM. Problems associated with managing records and information in organizations will increase. Competition grows stronger and so will the understanding for the need of well organized management of information and swift flow of information. At the same time we must not forget historical value of records and we must see that they be preserved for future generations.
