Indflydelse er atter i første Linie betinget af den Tilslutning,
Foreningen finder blandt Rigets Indbyggere.
Blandt disse har Tilliden til vore fjærne Landsdeles Frem-
tid og Betydning for Riget gennemgaaende været ringe; men
heldigvis kan det uden Overdrivelse siges om alle de 4 Øgrup-
per, at Tilliden til deres Fremtid og Troen paa deres Værdi
stiger med Kendskabet til dem, saaledes at Foreningen hidtil
stedse har kunnet glæde sig ved Tillid og varm Tilslutning hos
næsten alle de Personer, den har henvendt sig til, og som ifølge
deres Livsgerning maa forudsættes at have særlige Betingelser
for at kunne dømme i Sagen.
Vi kunne jo imidlertid ikke vente, at en almindelig Forsik-
ring herom skal vise sig tilstrækkelig til at vække Interesse hos
Befolkningens brede Lag, hvis Støtte er nødvendig for Sagens
Fremme, og de 4 Sektioner i Foreningens Bestyrelse have der-
for hver især foranlediget udarbejdet en kort Oversigt over Ud-
viklingsmulighederne for den Øgruppe, Sektionen repræsenterer.
Idet disse Bidrag anføres nedenstaaende, pege vi altsaa paa
Maalet; vi bede dernæst danske Mænd og Kvinder om at give
os Midlerne ved en talrig Indmeldelse i Foreningen.
Island.

En dansk Mand, som for et Par Aar siden opholdt sig i
Sommerbesøg paa Island, ytrede til en Bekendt, der var Islæn-
der, sin Forundring over og Beklagelse af hvor alt paa Island
stod tilbage, og hvilken Vantrivsel der var allevegne. Islænderen,
der netop havde haft Lejlighed til at iagttage de senere Aars
Fremskridt paa forskellige Omraader, indrømmede ikke ganske,
at Danskeren havde Ret i sin Udtalelse, men han forstod sær-
deles godt, hvorledes hans Opfattelse var opstaaet. I Virkelig-
heden er det fuldt naturligt, at en fremmed, især en, der kom-
mer fra et Land som Danmark, hvor saa at sige hver Plet Jord
dyrkes efter alle Kunstens Regler og kan give mangedobbelt
Udbytte, og hvor endogsaa de jyske Heder nu omdannes til
Kornmarker eller Skovplantager — at en fremmed, der kommer
til Island, faar det Indtryk, at Landet staar meget langt tilbage;
derimod kan det ikke forlanges, at han straks skulde kunne se,
