Vanskelighed ved at beskytte Faarene mod Hundene, naar først
Interessen er der. I Sydgrønland holdes kun Hunde i det
nordligste Distrikt.
Den Betydning, Faaret vil kunne faa for Befolkningen, maa
vurderes meget højt, ikke alene til Føde i Vintertiden, især for de
allerede talrige Familier, hvis Overhoved af en eller anden Grund
daarligt kan fange Sæler, men ogsaa for Uldens Skyld. Der ind-
føres allerede for ikke ganske smaa Summer Uldvarer til Grøn-
land, dels i Form af færingske Trøjer, dels som Vadmel. De
ere bievne en Nødvendighed for Befolkningen og kunde tilvirkes
i Landet at dets egen Befolkning.
I det allersydligste Grønland holdes der en Del Kø er, baade
af Danske og af nogle Grønlændere, der her have gjort Skridtet
fra Jægerfolk til Kvægavlere. Kohold vil sikkert kunne lykkes
inde i Fjordene helt op til 66° n. Br., og dets Betydning som
Erhverv ved Siden af Jagt og Fiskeri er utvivlsom.
Sammen med Spørgsmaalet om Kvægavl hænger Spørgsmaalet
om Planteavl til Kreaturernes Vinterfodring. Thi skal
Vinterfoderet indføres, bliver dette Erhverv urentabelt. Nu kan
der talrige Steder i Sydgrønland bjærges Hø nok paa naturlige
Græsgange, men længere nordpaa ere Steder med rig Græsvækst
mere spredte. Og dog kunne gode Græsser meget vel trives her.
Over hele Grønland vokser f. Eks. En g-Rap græs, Amerikaner-
nes højt priste »Kentucky Blue Grass« vildt, jeg har i Nord-
grønland set Straa, der bleve henimod 3 Alen høje. Ved Siden
af dette bør navnlig fremhæves Fjæld-Timothe, og Fjæld-
Rævehale, samt en Slags Guldhavre. De vokse overalt; men
navnlig paa gødede Steder, som Affaldsdynger ved Husene, danne
de to første et tæt og højt voksende meget bladrigt og saftigt
Grønsvær. Der er ingen som helst Tvivl om, at man af disse
Græsser med ringe Arbejde kan faa gode og varige Græsgange
hl Høbjærgning frem.
I min Artikel i »Atlanten«s første Hefte fremhævede jeg,
at der i Grønland utvivlsomt er baade Plads og Vildren nok
til at en Befolkning af Rensdyr-Nomader kan leve ved Siden
af den indfødte Befolkning, uden at dennes Interesser derved
kendelig berøres. Det er navnlig det brede, isfri Land omkring
Bunden af Fjordene paa Vestkysten, der vil egne sig hertil, og
som en yderligere Fordel for Rensdyravl i Grønland kan frem-
hæves, at Renens Fjender, Ulven og Bremsen mangler. — For-
