veksling af pragtfulde Landskaber og vidtstrakte Udsigter over
Land og Sø, langt større end de fleste af Øens egne Indbyggere
ane, men den overgaas dog langt af St. Jan og af St. Croix’
Nordsidebjærge.
Vil man til St. Jan, er det bedst at bestille Baad derovre

St. Jan Baade, der ligge i Havnen, eller ved at sende et Par
Ord til en af Baadejerne i Nærheden af Cruzbay om at give
Møde med Baaden en tidlig Morgen ved Smiths bay paa St.
Thomas. Man kører da dertil med Proviant og Is for Dagens
Maaltider, med Parasol for at skærme sig mod den varme Sol,
hvis Overfarten skulde blive for lang paa Grund af Vindstille, og
med en Havelock eller Plaid imod Begnvejr og Aftenkøligheden.
De kraftige sorte Matroser bære Passagererne og Bagagen om
Bord i Halvdæksbaaden, og »Capt. Willy« eller »Capt. Jimmy« —
Baadførerne ere altid Kaptajner — sætter Sejlene for det U/2 &
2 Timers Kryds over Sundet til den kønne lille Landfogedbolig
i Cruzbay eller rettere Christiansbay, der er det officielle, nu
næsten forglemte Navn paa den lille By. Efter en Visit hos
Landfogden akkorderer man med en af de to Politibetjente om Ride-
heste, og Betjenten lader sig gerne engagere som Fører paa Turen.
I Løbet af en Dag faar man et ganske godt Indtryk af
Øens skønne Natur, og om Aftenen rider man tilbage, medens
Solen synker bag St. Thomas’ Bjærge og bringer Rødehuks
Skrænter til at straale dobbelt i Solnedgangens luende Skær.
1 Skoven synger Busksangeren, og Duerne kurre, men alt
overdøves af Cikadernes skærende Violintoner. Saa synker Solen
helt. Ildfluernes Fosforglimt lyse fra Buske og Græs. I Maanens
sølvklare Skær stryger Baaden med de fulde Sejl spilede ud for
Passaten hjem, ikke til Smiths bay, men sønden om St. Thomas
lige til Konge værftet ved Foden af Byens gamle røde Fort.
Hvis man vil tilbringe længere Tid paa St. Jan, gør man
bedst i at akkordere med Forvalter Lindquist paa Plantage-
selskabets smukke Ejendom America Hiil, og herfra kan man
da i Løbet af en Uges Tid i al Ro og Mag foretage sine Ud-
flugter til Hest.
Mod Øst gaar Stien langs Kysten Mahobay og Leinster-
bay ned til Brownsbays jærnholdige Klipper, derfra i Zigzag
op over Bjærgene og ned over deres sydlige Skraaning ad den
stejle Sti, der ikke uden Grund kaldes »the ladder« o: Stigen.
