during this period, reached to the sur- face. 5) The model predicts that the number of dikes in a particular dike swarm in Ice- land should be from about 400 to about 1400, depending on the lifetime and spreading rate of the volcanic system (dike swarm) in question. It is estimated that the Álftafjörður dike swarm, which is a typical swarm in Eastern Iceland, con- tains about 1000 dikes. The long-term pre- dictions of the model are thus in reasonable agreement with observations. Furthermore, provided the Reykjanes Peninsula takes up all the spreading in the southernmost part of Iceland, the model predicts the number of Holocene erup- tions on the Peninsula as 46-288, which is not far from the observed number of 200 eruptions. 54
