This article, which appears in two parts, in
this and the previous volume, sums up
volcanism in Japan, tells of the Japanese
volcanoes, and the causes and conse-
quences of the volcanism. The article es-
pecially delves into some better known
volcanoes, the phenomenon of hydrother-
mal activity, and the difficulties which are
involved in living in an area subject to the
hazards of volcanic activity. It further in-
cludes summary of volcanism in Kagoshi-
ma Prefecture with emphasis on Sakura-
jima and reviews the Kagoshima Interna-
tional Conference on Volcanoes held in
August 1988. The conference was held to
discuss all possible aspects of volcanic haz-
ards, volcanic research, and the various
influences volcanism can have upon hu-
mans. Its motto was: „Towards Better
Coexistence between Human Beings and
Volcanoes“. Finally the article gives an
Icelandic translation of the Kagoshima
Declaration, which was accepted at the
end of the conference.
