nr. 67.62 Sennilegt er því, að tvíkvæðar áhrifsmyndir hafi ekki kom-
ið upp fyrr en um miðja 15. öld.
í nýmálinu hafa ekki orðið gagngerar breytingar á beygingu þess-
ara fornafna — eða fornafns, þar sem varla er lengur ástæða til að
tala um tvö sjálfstæð fornöfn — og er beygingin í nútímamáli hin

SUMMARY
The present article treats the origin of tlie indefinite pronoun nokkur, nokkuS
‘some’ and traces its development in Icelandic. In section I, by means of com-
parative evidence from the cognate Germanic languages, this pronoun is derived
from the Proto-Scandinavian syntagmes *ni-wait-hwarjai\ and *ni-wait-hwata,
probably loan-translations from Latin nescio quis, nescio quid. Section II pre-
sents, in tables I and II, the earliest inflection, as shown by the earliest, twelfth
and early thirteenth century, manuscripts and the earliest scaldic poetry, of
these pronouns in Icelandic. (At that time, they must be regarded as two distinct
pronouns). Section III traces the development of the earliest stem forms from
the antecedent Proto-Scand. syntagmes. The phonologically regular stem form
is nekkuer- and, of the neuter pronoun, nekkuat; naklcuat—the most frequent
form—is due to the influence of the vowel of the second syllable on that of the
first. The stem nakkuar- is due to transformation of nekkuer- under the
influence of nakkuat; its secondary origin is shown by the fact that it never has
t-inflection (e. g. acc. sg. fem. nakkuara, never *nakltuaria like nekkueria).
Section IV shows the inflection in two later thirteenth century manuscripts
(table III). Then, sections V—XII trace the development of the inflection in
the thirteenth century. On the one hand, the vowel of the first syllable has been
rounded; on the other, radical changes have taken place in the second syllable

skri/tsamling (Kpbenhavn 1889—94), I, 148).
