different when compared with the combined older age
groups (p < 0.01) and with the 25-29 year group
(p<0.01). Women aged 20-24 and 30-34 years had a
lower incidence than seen in the lowest age group but the
difference was not significant. Although a trend for a
higher proportionate incidence of chlamydial infection
was observed with lower parity and with some
professional groups, these differences were not
significant. There was no relation with marital status by
whether the women were cohabiting or not, nor by place
of residence. Mean gestational length and mean
birthweight were not different from the general obstetric
population.
The incidence of gonorrhea in pregnancy appears to be
low in Iceland while that of chlamydial infection is
similar to what has been found in screening situations
elsewhere. Young women appear most at risk of
harbouring chlamydia and screening of this group may
be advisable.
