The conditions for collection of data on the sea ice near Iceland have improved tremend- ously in the last decade and a half. Special long range ice reconnaissance flights are made now and then to the sea areas north and north- east of Iceland, and their reports are issued regularly. Satellites take several pictures daily of the main ice, and infrared satellite pictures are also fairly frequent, giving information on ice conditions during the long polar night. And in Iceland at least, popular interest in sea ice and sea ice research has increased, reports of sea ice from ships are much more frequent than before, and nunierous short range recon- naissance flights are made over the ice while it is near the Icelandic coasts.
