the stream from the ‘shoulderblade’ flows
under the armpit of the rtorthern arm although
no evidence was observed.
The annual movement of the snout of Virkis-
jökull lias been measured by members of Jökla-
rannsóknafélag Islands. The measurements will
be found in successive editions of ‘Jökull’. The
measurements must be somewhat problematical
since the furthest extension of the ice dis-
appears below moraine and outwash ancl the
snout is about 1000 yards up-valley of this
point. The relative presence or absence of
moraine must be critical in determining the
amount of surface ablation and retreat.
In the summers of 1967/8 Falljökull has
been visited by parties from the Brathay Ex-
ploration Group, an organisation based on
Brathay Hall in the English Lake District
where, since 1947, there has been a permanent
centre which runs four-week courses for boys
in industry. Expeditions are arranged for boys
who have been on the courses and for senior
boys from schools; they are staffed by volun-
tary leaders mainly from schools and universi-
ties. En 1962 the Group was fortunate to be
joined by a nurnber of Icelandic boys who later
visited our lieadquaters with Guttormur Sig-
bjarnarson. Apart from Iceland, parties have
carried out scientific work in many places in-
cluding Norway and Greenland, Poland and
Yugoslavia, Tunisia and in East Africa.
The Exploration Group has visited Iceland
since 1953 and has taken expeditions to the
South-east since 1959 primarily to undertake
studies of the Great Skuas, but in 1967/68 this
