Background: increasing pressure from individuals to live inde-
pendently for as long as possible in spite of failing health and the
growing number of those requesting nursing services gives reason
to consider the benefits of using a comprehensive assessment in-
strument that assesses health status, functioning and need for serv-
ice such as the resident assessment instrument-home Care
(interrai-hC).
Objectives: To evaluate the health status, functioning and need for
service of individuals receiving home care nursing in akranes and
Sauðárkrókur according to the interrai-hC initial assessment and
MaPLe algorithm, which prioritises individuals according to serv-
ice categories based on data from the assessment. furthermore
compare findings and investigate differences between the commu-
nities and to evaluate whether it would be beneficial for home nurs-
ing and social home services to utilize such an instrument.
Methods: The study is a quantitative retrospective comparative
study. The participants were home care nursing clients in akranes
(n=60) and Sauðárkrókur (n=42).
Results: The average age of clients in akranes was 79.4 years and
83.4 years in Sauðárkrókur. The prevalent age group was 81–90
years old (akranes: 43.3%; Sauðárkrókur: 48.8%). More clients in
akranes than in Sauðárkrókur were lonely, participated less in so-
cial activities and had some form of distress in the last 90 days,
