The purpose of this study was to investigate daily activities and participation among community-dwelling older people in this area. Method: a descriptive cross-sectional design was used and the sample consisted of all community-dwelling residents, 65 years or older. Participants were 68 women and 61 men, aged 65–91 years (participation rate=80.1%). Data was collected with the Late Life function and Disability instrument where participants self-as- sessed their difficulties in activities as well as frequency and limi- tations of participation. The instrument provides interval scale scores (0-100) where a higher score means less difficulties in ac- tivities, more frequent participation, and less participation restric- tions. Data was analysed by gender and age-groups (65–74 years and 75–91 years) and statistical significance set at p<0.05. Results: Overall, men reported less difficulties in activities (M=68.0) than women (M=61.3), and the same was true for the younger age-group (M=72.2) compared to the older (M=57.4). fre- quency of participation was higher for women (M=51.9) than men (M=49.2) and also higher for the younger age-group (M=52.0) than the older (M=49.3). Moreover, the older age-group experienced their participation to be more limited than the older group (M=68.8 and M=78.8). Participants described variety of barriers that older citizens have to overcome for participation in self-care and social life. Conclusion: The results provide valuable information on activities and participation of older residents in a rural setting and have prac- tical implications for community services in the research area.
