The last two sets of examples are obviously not in accord with the no-
tion that 560 is specially related to M. But when measured against the
earlier examples their testimony must be found less weighty. Here too
the explanation must be that more than one copyist has made the same
changes or omissions independently.
It seems not unlikely that the passage from 560 just discussed be-
longs to the same branch of the stemma as fragment x, or was even
copied from leaves in the codex of which x is a remnant. But the pas-
sage in 560 and the fragment do not overlap, so complete certainty in
the matter is hardly attainable. It should be mentioned that fragment x
consists of two leaves, the first corresponding to ca. 115 and the second
to 111 printed lines in EgFJ, with a gap between them of two leaves cor-
responding to ca. 218 lines. These four leaves accordingly contained
text totalling some 444 printed lines. From the beginning of the saga to
the change of exemplar at EgEA I, ch. 14,23, there are about 813 lines
in Finnur Jonsson’s edition. It is tempting to think that this passage oc-
cupied the first quire (eight leaves) of the x codex, but this can be no
more than an uncertain guess: the figures offer a reasonable approxima-
tion but not an exact match.16
