pronoun used as an article before an adjective (e.g.
Su elldri 5215); variations in conjugation such as matt-
ist, weak, instead of matst (107 20) and puerrar instead
of þverr (12014); missa with acc. instead of gen. (11021);
mundi for the pret. infinitive (734); and not least
gigrdur instead of gorr (5311, 754 etc.). There are also
foreign words such as hoffrackt (5016), sinni (831),
barna spil (1019), mgguligt (501, 11011), Jclökur (878),
strax (6622 etc.), and jaga, (8411). Thus although parts
of the subject-matter of Hrólfs saga kraka are very
old in origin, the recension of the saga preserved for
us appears to be rather late.
As has been remarked above, each manuscript has
the spelling of its own time, and it may be useful to
draw attention here to some of the forms and spellings
which will be encountered in reading the text sup-
plied by 285, but which are not so significant as those
just discussed, and to indicate in part the extent to
which these are found in other manuscripts (9, 109,
Sl7, and 11 particularly).
Tlie words vesta (2923), þosti (8921), veist (346), sest
(3912), þirti (8411) and dramsgm (5421) show assimila-
tions found in other manuscripts from time to time;
all of them have volna in 962 for volgna. The use of e
instead of g found in 285 in Higruardur (see note in
Textual Variants, 5018), fielmenni (1723), giere (7416)
and a small number of other words, also occurs some-
times in other manuscripts. Fleyid (5918), þeyia (768)
and tijinna (1228), each so spelled in at least one other
manuscript, stand for fleigid, þeigid and tyginna; con-
versely, eiginn (32) is for eyinn, which is in all the
others. Syrna (35) is a spelling for synna. Druckurinn
(7 020), if really meant to have u, is perhaps a lapse in
spelling which reveals Brynjólfur Jónsson’s pronuncia-
tion; but although most of the other manuscripts
have y or i, 9 also has u in this word at this
