English Summary
The Internet as a Reference Source
In this article the author discusses the reliability of information on the
Internet. Many people believe in the Internet as an absolute reference source
and do not assess the information to be found there critically at all. Others
consider the Internet to be a maze of mainly irrelevant, badly organized in-
formation and therefore of very little value. In the author’s opinion neither
of these views are acceptable. The author urges a critical attitude towards
the Internet and lists factors to be examined in assessing the quality of web
pages. She mentions the importance of educational Internet programs in
schools, both at the elementary and college level. Libraries should also play
a role in educating the public. Their main role should however be the crit-
ical assessment of Internet information sources. The article ends by discuss-
ing the Icelandic government’s information policy.
