kvæmt að gagnabankar séu sem fæstir og stærstir og vel
samnýtanlegir. Bókfræðilegar færslur í alþjóðlegu sniði gefa
kost á því. Þannig er unnt að nýta skráningu annarra með
sem minnstum tilkostnaði, utanlands frá og innan, með
þeim gæðum sem upp á er boðið, svo sem alþjóðlegri flokk-
un og innlendum tilbrigðum ásamt stöðluðum efnisorðum
sem samsvara dýpt eða sérhæfni þess efnis sem lyklað er
hverju sinni. Kerfisleg samhæfni er skilyrði en jafnframt
nægilegt kerfislegt svigrúm og sjálfstæði fyrir söfn og safna-
tegundir til að koma fram þeim áherslum sem hæfa best teg-
undum safna og notendahópum þeirra.

Nordic National Libraries and Indexing Trends
Following the automization of libraries over the last decades ever more libr-
ary catalogues are now accessible on the www. These national and union
catalogues are sources for economical record retrieval, allowing multiple use
of bibliographical entries across the world. The National and University
Library of Iceland library system which is called Gegnir, also houses the
Gegnir Union Catalog, e.g. Samskrá Gegnis (http://www.hi.is/telnet/gegnir.
html). Although retrospective conversion and cataloguing is in its later
stages detailed library subject indexing is not a tradition going far back.
Foreign records (downloaded from OCLC, SLS, etc.) are usually supplied
with subject terms. But additionally retrospective indexing of Icelandic
records has been taking place for the past decade, usually classwise accor-
ding to DDC classes. At the same time specialized thesauri in the same
subject fields are being compiled, reflecting the literary warrant, and based
on ISO 2788 (ÍST 90). Together these various thesauri build the Gegnir
Thesaurus, Efnisorðaskrá Gegnis. Regular current indexing of national
records started in January 1997. All Icelandic periodicals have now been
allocated subject terms, but so far there has only been selective indexing of
individual articles in the separate database Greinir (http://.hi.is/telnet/
greinir.html).
