The Holberg Prize will be awarded annually, beginning 3 December 2004. The prize has been established by the
Norwegian Government and has a value of NOK 4.5 million (approx. 520,000, $ 640,000). It is administered
by the Board of the Ludvig Holberg Memorial Fund.
The prize is named after the Norwegian/Danish scholar and playwright Ludvig Holberg. Holberg was born in
Bergen in 1684 and held the Chair of Metaphysics and Logic, Latin Rhetoric and History at the University of
Copenhagen. Holberg had a modernising influence on his research fields. His work has been widely published
and has had a broad appeal outside academia.
The prize will be awarded to one or several scholars who have made outstanding and internationally recognised
contributions in the areas of arts and humanities, social sciences, law and theology. The contribution may be
within the framework of one discipline or be multi-disciplinary in nature.
The Holberg Board will select the laureate based upon the recommendations of an academic committee. The name
of the Holberg laureate will be announced 15 September 2004.
Scholars holding a senior position at a university or research institution in any of the above mentioned disciplines
may nominate candidates for the prize. The nomination letter should include a brief statement justifying the
nomination as well as a CV listing the candidate’s main publications and other scholarly achievements.

The Board of the Ludvig Holberg Memorial Fund at the University of Bergen hereby calls for nominations
for the Holberg International Memorial Prize for outstanding scientific work in the areas of the arts and
humanities, social sciences, law and theology.

The Nils Klim Prize will be awarded annually, beginning 3 December 2004. The prize has been established by
the Norwegian Government and has a value of NOK 250,000 (approx. 29,000, $ 35,000). It is administered
by the Board of the Ludvig Holberg Memorial Fund.
