302 LÆKNABLAÐIÐ SUMMARY Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was performed in 35 patients aged 19 to 76 years. Interactions between indications for the study were often complex. The main indications, however, were suspected endocarditis, prosthetic valve dysfunction, native valvular disease, disorders of the aorta, and assessment of patients with peripheral embolic events or stroke. Twentyfive patients were hospitalized and 5 of these were studied intraoperatively during heart surgery, 10 were outpatients. TEE was more specific than transthoracic echo in 20 of 35 patients. In 15 patients TEE led to further assessment by cardiac catheterization or to change in treatment. Complications during the TEE examination were rare. The results are in line with larger studies on the applicability of TEE. The paper further discusses the technique of transesophageal echocardiography, clinical applications end future prospects.
