sýklalyfjum. Um 25% sjúklinganna lagast þó
af sjálfu sér án meðferðar líkt og sést við
bráða eyrnabólgu. Rannsóknir og reynsla
benda einnig til þess, að meðhöndla þurfi með
sýklalyfjum í að minnsta kosti 14 daga til að
fullkomin lækning náist.
Sumar rannsóknir hafa dregið í efa nauðsyn
þess að meðhöndla skútabólgu með
sýklalyfjum (39-41). Sjúklingar í þessum
rannsóknum voru meðhöndlaðir í 10 daga
með sýklalyfjum sem í mörgum tilfellum
voru ekki virk gegn bakteríum þeim sem
ræktaðar voru frá skútunum. Aðferðarfræði
þessara rannsókna var einnig í mörgu öðru
ábótavant og rýra þessi atriði niðurstöður
þeirra verulega.
Val sýklalyfja og meðferðarlengd fer eftir því,
hversu lengi sjúkdómseinkennin hafa staðið og
hvaða bakteríur eru líklegir sjúkdómsvaldar.
Gagnsemi annarra lyfja hefur hins vegar ekki
verið rannsökuð til fulls. I fáum tilfellum er
skurðaðgerð nauðsynleg.
