UTILITY OF RADIOGRAPHS IN CHILDREN VÍITH
CLINICAL INFECTION OF THE PARANASAL SINUSES.

Abstract:
A prospective ciinical-radiographic study
uas undertaken tc assess the utility of the
various viev;s taken at a radiographical
examination of small children, clinically
suspected of infection of the paranasal
sinuses.The purpose uas to find out if any
cf the three conventional radiographic views;
the Waters', the Caldwell and the straight
Laterai could be omitted víithout compromising
the diagnostic information.
Primarily,70 children under six years of age,
vúth clinical signs of sinusitis were exami-
ned. To evaluate the response to therapy, 34
chiidren v/ere referred for follovf-up examina-
tion. The radiographical findings vrere ana-
iysed in correlation v;ith their clinical
status after treatment.
Fifty-r.ine children (86%) had radiographic
evidence of disease in the paranasal sinuses.
The maxillary sinuses v;ere always involved in
the sinus pathology.The Waters'view was found
to be the most valuable to identify the pre-
sence of sinus disease.
The radiographic findings in follow-up exami-
nation corresponded to the clinical status in
91%.
Conclusions: 1) In this age group Roentgen
examination of the paranasal sinuses is a
reliabie and valuable adjuvant to the clinical
diagnosis.
2) In the majority of these cases only one
radiographic projection,the Waters' viev;,was
sufficient to give the diagnosis.
