ern Eldgjá first flowed in two branches, along the Hólmsá river bed and a channel cut into jökulhlaup debris,
then coalesced to form the lava field Álftavershraun. At the western margin of the lava, a solid line shows the
outermost exposures of lava. A broken line shows the margin as inferred by magnetic measurements; an arrow
indicates the location of the traverse. The late flow lobes are not shown. The lavas from other segments coa-
lesced in the gorge of the river Skaftá and formed a single lava field with different local names, Landbrotshraun
and Meðallandshraun, now partly covered by the Skaftár lava (outlines after Jóhannesson et al., 1990). B and
