All these manuscripts are undoubtedly derived from
one lost common original, and their textual relations
are discussed in full in Bibl. Arnam. XXIV. The most
useful of the primary manuscripts are the following:
AM 285, 4to, written in January 1654 by Brynj-
ólfur Jónsson of Efstaland in Öxnadalur. It is likely
that this and other manuscripts by the same scribe
were written for bishops of Hólar. The first and last
leaves of 285 have been added by Árni Magnússon,
who split up the codex of which it was once a part;
the codex probably came into his possession from
Iceland in 1702.
