mistakes are indicated by noting the manuscript read-
ing at the foot of the text. Alterations of grammatical
forms and other emendations are marked with an
asterisk. It may he seen from the Apparatus C'riticus,
used as described above, that there are plenty of
other passages where it is likely that the text of 285
is not the best available to us. Moreover the text
which can be established by comparing the extant
manuscripts is unsatisfactory in many places.
The manuscripts from which variants are given in
the Apparatus Criticus are 9, 109, S17, 11 and S13.
The term “all” in the Apparatus means all these five
manuscripts; “rest” means those of the five which
are not mentioned by name at that point. The variant
reading is given in the spelling of 9 wherever possible;
failing 9, in the spelling of 109; and so on down the
list in the order given above. The method of tran-
scribing is the same as for the text, except that all
kinds of abbreviations have been expanded without
indication. This also applies to the quotations in Bibl.
Arnam. XXIV from the texts in other manuscripts;
there too there has been further rationalisation, in
that letters like œ and ó have not been reproduced
(transcribed av and o).
In references to variants which run on from one
page to another, the second page number is usually
omitted. 2211 can only mean 221-3J (quite apart from
the words given to define the extent of the quotation).
But in cases where doubt might arise, this practice is
not followed, e.g. 221-(3)2, because 221'2 might wrongly
be taken to mean 22122.
Where a quotation (in the Apparatus or Bibl.
Arnam. XXIV) consists of two words separated by a
dash, e.g. 1610 med—sijnum, the whole phrase is refer-
red to (med Nordra Jcongi magie sijnum). Where the
