two words are separated by dots, e.g. 163 endar.. .þátt,
only those two words are in question, and not the
intervening words.
The variants are given in very full form, but are
necessarily not complete. There would be little point
in recording for so many manuscripts variations such
as seigir / suarar \ mælir, ei / ecki, sem / er, the use
or omission of the article, changes of tense, and so on.
But many variations of little worth are noted, so that
a record may be made once and for all. This is par-
ticularly the case when all the other main rnanu
scripts agree on a reading against 285. 285 is thus
treated more harshly than the other manuscripts, and
its possible deviations are exposed more thoroughly.
For the reconstruction of the common original it is
necessary to have this information about 285, though
it is not available in so complete a form for the other
manuscripts (and especially not for S13).
