TEXTUAL COMMENTARY
The text of Hrólfs saga kraka has not been handed
down in good shape, and a commentary which sought
to cover all the obscurities and difficulties in it would
be very long. Moreover, once the text of the common
original has been established, attempts to improve
upon that corrupt text can only be based on guess-
work, however inspired or reasonable. Here notes are
given only on certain points of particular interest or
importance, and some late expressions.
49 þad2] Other editors, except E. J. Björner, have
emended þad to hier nálœgt, the reading of 10 (and
also have Enn, the reading of 9, for the preceding Ein).
Although it is possible that 10 may have occasionally
preserved an original reading, the agreement of the
other primary manuscripts makes it unhkely that
hier nálœgt is anything other than an emendation by
the scribe of 10 (probably Páll Sveinsson). Þad may
be a late substitution for another pronoun, but emen-
dation is not desirable. Cf. the use of þad in 3015.
71 j gdru] This is puzzling as it stands; it has de-
scended from the common original, where it may
perhaps have been a corruption of gdru sinni or
j annad sinn, or possibly even j jgrdu.
