a, line 1, the 5 is a large red initial 1.5 cm. tall (ca.
3 lines). At the end of the line, after war, there is a space
of perhaps seven letters where something was originally
written in red, possibly the word saga. kongs is abbre-
viated here in exactly the same way as kong, but note
that hans is abbreviated exactly as hann as well. Line 2,
the o of koppum may be ö, but a crease makes it difficult
to be positive. Line 4 is clipped so that only the tops of
a few letters now remain; the reading as given is certain
enough, however. Preceding the digan are the bare tops
of what is possibly ar, but there is no remnant of the
tall k which one expects. k could, of course, have been
at the end of line 3 which is now clipped off. It is also
possible that the name, a foreign one, was spelled with c,
even though c is very rare in the fragments (cf. text of
Mírmann below). It is a characteristic of the fragments
that the lines of text are very even at the ends. The mis-
sing part at the end of line 3 is sufficient for about nine
letters — by comparison with the end of line 2. On the
basis of the other MSS one expects merely er, or perhaps
sem, but kaslala could have been modified by some ad-
jective, of course. The first Ietter of the word following
kastala is too clipped to be identified, but it is clearly not þ
(JB suppliesþeim). Following war are the tops of what may
be um (with a nasal stroke) pask, but it is very difficult
to be certain.
b, line 1, most of this line is clipped away, including
the tops of the letters in the four words read; these seem
fairly certain, however. Line 2, in sem wid the assumed
nasal stroke over the e and the superscript / over the w
are clipped. After hluti four letters of the next word are
