(in exchange). As soon as they meet, one of them thrusts at
rhim (Erex) into his shield, and it did not cut deeply, but the
thrust ran out from it and down into the ground, and he bent
down after it. Erex struck him with his lance so hard on his
neck that (+ both) his eyes flew out of rhim (his head). He
fell to the ground unconscious, and his horse trod him Tto
the ground (-y) under foot to death. The second cuts Twith 35
his sword (at Erex) into his shield so Thard (+) that it stuck
fast íin the shield (+). Erex twists the shield so (+ hard) that
the sword came loose from the other’s hand (+ then), and he
strikes him so hard (+ on the head) with the shield-rim that
his brains lay outside. The third retreats. THe (Erex) shoots
rthat one (him) through with his spear. He fell rto the ground
(down) dead. At this (+ moment then) their five companions
came up. There begins there (+ now) a very hard battle, and
it ended rthus (with that)—that Erex slew them all but (+ he)
was little wounded. He takes (+ now) their weapons and
rclothing (horses), rides with his lady to the castle, (+ he)
sleeps there rduring (through) the night, and there were there
no people present.
Chapter VIII
(+ The slaying of Baliin and the duel of Erex
and King Gunner.)
In the morning early rErex (he) rides from the castle and
(+ he) locks it securely. He brings from there eight horses 36
loaded with booty, and there was nevertheless (+ much) more
behind. His lady rides (+ still) ahead, and he drives the horses
behind. They travel thus for many days and lie out of doors at
night, until they come to a certain castle which is called
Pulchra. There TEarl (that earl whose name was) Milon ruled.
There Erex takes Tquarters for the night (lodgings) within the
castle with a yeoman. All (+ men who see her) marveled
(+ now) Tat her beauty (at the beauty and handsomeness of
Evida). This was (+ now) told to the earl (+ himself). He
goes Tafterward (immediately) to meet TEvida and Erex (them)
and receives Tthem well (Erex and his sweetheart well and sits
down beside them), but Tnevertheless (+) he did not know
them. TNevertheless (but) his (+ heart nor) eyes were (+ now)
nowhere except on Evida —rand no less. his heart (+)—and
he seemed Tall (completely) to be burning Tbecause of love
(from the heat of love for her). He speaks to her secretely
