Chapter XI
(+ Erex’ faint and the fall of Earl Placidus.)
That is (+ now) to be told about Erex Tand his lady (+),
they ride rtoward (out of) the forest to green fields. Then
a hemorrhage assails him so Tseverely (+) that he falls (+
unconscious) from his horse. That unconsciousness lasted
so long that Evida thinks him (+ to be) dead and bewails her
lot in all ways and weeps sorely and lies down on his body
and spoke with these words: “I íhave become wretched from
the death of (am now a wretched woman in respect to) my
husband—and in respect to that other: that with my tongue
I brought him on this journey, when I was not silent about the
Tunjust (+) reproach of evil men (+ toward him). But how

For that reason I shall get myself a quick death with his
sword.” She then draws the sword with sorrowful weeping—
so that it could be heard for a long distance—and wanted to
raise it on the hilt, but it was so heavy that she could scarcely
lift (+ it) from the ground. Always when she hurt her fingers
(+ on the sword), rthen (+) she pulled her Thand (hands) to
herself quickly, and ithen (now) she intends to rfall (let
herself fall) on the edges.
When she was at this work, there came Triding (+) toward
her with a great company of men a certain (+ powerful)
earl—whose name was Placidus—and removes Tthis (then
that) danger from her. TThey (he) considered it (+ now) a bad
plan Tthat she (to) destroy both her life and her soul and lose

heaven. The earl (+ now comforts her and) says that her
beauty and fine manners might quickly get her a superior
husband, but she scorns all his íadvice (words). The earl
(+ now) bids his men prepare a bier in the forest, and Twhen
that was done (that is now done at once and) the body is

and worthily arranged. The earl (+ now) sets Evida Ton his

her and offers her to have himself [in marriage] and (+ to
