(your) big words rfor (worth) ?—because real men are supposed
to fight with weapons and not with Tabusive (~) words. And
if you are eager to play evilly, then you Tshall have (will receive
here) the like in return (+ or worse).”
Now there begins there a fvery (h-) hard tilt, and each
breaks his lance on the other, but neither (+ of them) went
out of the saddle íbefore the other (-^). Afterward they leap
from their horses and fight with their swords, and each fgives
(renders) the other great blows. They both are íso (-h) tired
and wounded ithat they are scarcely able to stand up (-h).
But it ends thus with them, that he fell who offered the struggle,
and he (+ now) asks for quarter and gets it. Erex asks him 66
his name, and he says: “Malbanaring is my name. I was for a

and great champion. For this reason she did thus—that there
seemed to her a disgrace in it, that men knew that she had
only a Tknight (king [cf. note to text)) but was afraid that her
father would conquer Tme (^-) with a ígreat (-:-) host if he
Tfound out (can find out) where I am. Now íbe so good as to
(-y) tell me (+ out of condescension) your name, íthat I may

(-^) tells his name and his father’s, Tand (because) he recognizes
Malbanaring (+ now also) fully. There is there (+ now) a
great joyful meeting, because Evida recognizes here (+ now)
her kinswoman íwhose name was (-^) Elena. They were the
daughters of brothers. TAfterward (they now) all ride away
from there together to the king’s court. There is great joy
Tthere (-^) because of their arrival—first for the king and
afterward for all (+ the others) in addition. All (+ men)
praise Erex for his valor and knighthood.
