at her—and all the retainers—and they marveled at her beauty.
23 But she had blushed somewhat, when she was led into the hall,
because she was not accustomed every day to such a crowd.
TThe (her) color lof her face (+) was like the red rose joined
with Ta white color like the lilly (the white lilly), or the red
blood in Tnew-fallen snow (snow-white fresh snow), or (+ also)
the sun’s brightness in cloudless weather. Fitting were her
actions in sitting and walking and in all her conduct.
Now the queen speaks to the king: ‘THe (that knight) is
worthy of great honor who performed such great [feats of]
rbravery and (-y) valor and brought ísuch (so beautiful) a
girl to our retinue, and for this reason let Thim (her) be welcome
to all of us.” “That is true (+, Lady),” says the king, ‘Tand I
have not seen (that never did I see) a more beautiful girl, and
if that is a matter of agreement of the retainers and the judge-
ment af all—that she may well be called the most beautiful
and most well-bred of all the girls in our retinue—then T (we)
wish to receive from her that kiss which ri (we have) earned
Iwith my spear (now grant her a true pronouncement in this
matter and adjudge me this kiss.)” The king concluded his
24 speech fso (with this) that all fconsented (rejoice and say) with
one voice that she alone would be deserving to receive rthis
boon (this kiss from the king because of her beauty). TAfter-
ward that was (and that is now) the judgement of all (+ men),
fand next (afterward) the king turns to the lady and spoke:
“You, beautiful (+ lady and) girl, this kiss I give to you of
no guile nor ill-will, but rather fout of (with a sincere mind and
with) sacred love Tand good heart (+), fbecause that (that it)
shall be your due, while we both live, beyond all evil Tsuspicion
(deed).”
Chapter VI
(+ Erex’ wedding at King Arthur’s court

Now Erex asks King Arthur (+ after a short time) to hold
his wedding, and the king consents to that (+ gladly), sends
fimmediately (now) a summons throughout all his kingdom
to kings and earls and other chieftains that they should all
come to him at the "piniz-/putis-days” [?]—íwhich (but) some
25 (+ men) call “Pentecost” or “Whitsun”—in Linkoim (+ to
this wedding), but otherwise fthey would (+) have his anger.
Erex now sends thirty knights fafter (to meet) the father and
