Sameiginlegt álit fundarmanna
var að brýn þörf væri á skipu-
lögðum úrvalsathugunum fyrir
íslenskar trjáplöntur. Flestir voru
sammála því að einn aðili ætti
að bera ábyrgð á framkvæmd til-
rauna. Mikil áhersla var lögð á
gott samstarf milli þeirra stofn-
ana og framleiðenda, sem vinna
við trjárækt, s.s. Skógræktar ríkis-
ins, Garðyrkjuskólans, Rann-
sóknastofnunar landbúnaðarins,
garðplöntuframleiðenda og
skógarplöntuframleiðenda. Ekki
má vanrækja þátt framleiðenda,
bæði sem ráðgefandi aðila og
sem framkvæmdaraðila við úr-
valsathuganir. Stungið var upp á
þvf að fá við úrvalsathuganirnar
erlendan sérfræðing, t.d Poul
Erik Brander, til þess að skipu-
leggja og gefa ráðleggingar um
úrvalsathuganir hér á landi.
Leitast var eftir því að fá við-
horf ýmissa hagsmunahópa um
plöntustaðal. Það var samdóma
álit að fullgildur plöntustaðall
væri til mikilla bóta. Endurskoða
þyrfti núverandi drög að plöntu-
staðli og gera hann einfaldari og
aðgengilegri. Til umræðu var að
hafa einn plöntustaðal með sér-
ákvæðum fyrir skógarplöntuupp-
eldi, eða sérstakan staðal fyrir
skógarplöntur og annan fyrir
garðplöntur.
Þörfin á plöntustaðli er mikil,
því að ef enginn landsstaðall er
fyrir hendi, mun Evrópustaðall
sjálfkrafa taka gildi í öllum EFTA
og EB löndum, þegar slíkur
Evrópustaðall um plöntur verður
saminn. En við samningu á Evr-
ópustöðlum er reynt að taka tillit
til alira landsstaðla sem fyrir
hendi eru, og þannig getum við
haft meiri áhrif á gerð slíks Evr-
ópustaðals. Var hvatt til þess að
hagsmunaaðilar hittust og leit-
uðu ráða um skipulagt starf með
Staðlaráði íslands.

and shrubs, and a plant standard
for the production and use of

turer was Poul Erik Brander, from
the Danish Research Service for
Plant and Soil Science. He lec-
tured on the Danish production
system of improved horticultural
plants.
The first step in the production
of improved plants is the collec-
ting of plant material from nur-
series, public parks, collections
in other countries, or from the
wild. Then the plant material has
to be tested for several years (10
years for shrubs, 15-25 years for
trees). During that time a num-
ber of characteristics are assess-
ed, the most important being
climatic tolerance and resistance
to diseases. Furthermore mini-
mum requirements are made e.g.
growth, foliage, blossom. It is
very important to produce
healthy plants therefore screen-
ing for bacterial, fungal and viral
diseases is important. Having
been tested and all pathogens
eradicated the clones are estab-
lished as nuclear stock plants.
Cuttings are taken from the
nuclear stock plants and supp-
lied to the Danish Growers' Elite
Plant Station, which uses the
material for the production of
elite stock plants. Progeny from
the elite stock plants is sold to
the growers as special stock
plants.
Icelandic plant standard for
the production and use of nur-
sery stock plants is not available
for Icelandic conditions. The
work on a plant standard for
trees and shrubs was started in
1985 but has not been pro-
ceeded. it is general agreement
that a plant standard is very
useful and the work on a plant
standard should be completed
as soon as possible.
