110 ENGLISH SUMMARY Um Chicagoför sr. Matthíasar Jochumssonar 1893. Finnbogi Guðmundsson tók saman. Landsbókasafn íslands. Árbók. Nýr flokkur 17 (1991). Rv. 1992, pp. 28-39. Iceland was not among the exhibitors at the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893, and no representatives were sent from Iceland except the Reverend Matthías Jochumsson, the poet and translator, who was invited by the organizers to participate in the work of the Folklore Congress. His expenses were, however, paid by free contributions of Icelanders living in America, and he used the opportunity to visit some of the Icelandic communities in Canada and the United States on his way to and from Chicago. Mr Jochumsson wrote an article and a book that was published later in the year, in which he describes the journey to Chicago, the city, his visit to Icelanders in America, their living conditions and the Exposition. The present account of Mr Jochumsson’s visit to America and the discussions that preceded it is based on excerpts from newspapers of the time and his own accounts. Jón Kjærnested: Bréf til Stephans G. Stephanssonar. Kirsten Wolf bjó til prentunar. Landsbókasafn íslands. Árbók. Nýr flokkur 17 (1991). Rv. 1992, pp. 40-64. Fourteen letters written to Mr Stephan G. Stephansson (1853-1927), the poet, by Mrjón Kjærnested (1861-1941) in the period 1900-1924 are printed here for the first time. Jón Kjærnested, also a poet, lived in Winnipeg Beach, Manitoba, and was chief of police there and Justice of the Peace for 21 years. The letters are now preserved in the National Library of Iceland with two exceptions (drafts dated 5 June 1904 and 12 February 1905, preserved among Mr Kjærnested’s papers in The Elizabeth Dafoe Library, University of Manitoba). The letters written by Stephan G. Stephansson to Jón Kjærnested have already been published in Skírnir (spring issue 1992). For the most part, Mr Kjærnested’s letters contain news about himself and his family and other Icelanders living in Manitoba as well as occasional remarks of literary interest. Eiríkur Þormóðsson: Skrá um handskrifuð blöð í Landsbókasafni íslands. Landsbókasafn fslands. Árbók. Nýrflokkur 17 (1991). Rv. 1992, pp. 65-87. This catalogue covers the holdings in the Department of Manuscripts of handwritten periodical publications to which shelf-marks have been assigned, with the exception of such publications that were issued by pupils of the Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík College, which have already been described else- where. Those publications, often known as “sveitarblöð” (parish magazines) as most of them were, in fact, flourished in the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. In many cases only one copy was made of each number, which then circulated from farm to farm. The “sveitarblöð" were issued during the winter only and usually they did not contain news items, but short articles on husbandry, agriculture, social activities, education, transport and other fields of importance to the community, as well as poetry and stories, sometimes translated. In the main section, which is arranged in alphabetical order by title, there is information about (1) the shelf-mark, (2) type of periodical and name of the parish or community where it was published, (3) editors and/or publishers, (4)
