It is con- cluded that it cannot be used also as a synonym for the dysodont Chlamys islandica as done in some recenlly published Icelandic dictionaries. The Pliocene deposits on western Tjörnes, North Iceland, were divided into three biozones by Guðmundur G. Bárðarson in 1925, the zona- tion being based on the distribution of marine bivalves within the sediments. He named them the basal Tapes Zone, the central Mactra Zone and the uppermost Cardium groenlandicum Zone. Three species oíTapes, now referred to as Venerupis, have been found in the Tapes Zone of the Tjömes deposits. These are Venerupis aurea, V. rhomboides and V. pullastra. Two of them, i.e. Venerupis pullastra and V. rhombo- ides, have also been found in the Mactra Zone. These species are all living today and rather com- mon around the British Isles, but they are not 35
