SUMMARY
Detection of different types of human
papillomavirus in dysplastic lesions of the genital
tract.
All biopsies of the cervix, vagina, vulva and
penis submitted for histologic diagnosis to the
Department of Pathology at the University of
Iceland during a two month period were analyzed
for different types of human papillomavirus (HPV).
A total of 146 biopsies were analyzed. The study
was performed by in-situ hybridization using
DNA probes for HPV 6/11, 16/18 and 31/35/51.
HPV was detected in 30% of lesions exhibiting
morphologic evidence of HPV infection. In general
biopsies which were positive for HPV 6/11 were
without dysplasia or had low grade dysplasia
(CIN I) while biopsies positive for HPV 16/18
or HPV 31/35/51 usually were of higher grades
of dysplasia (CIN II or III). These results indicate
that HPV types 6/11, 16/18 and 31/35/51 ail cause
infections of the genital tract in Iceland and that
the association of dysplasia with different types
of HPV appears similar in Iceland as described
elsewhere. It is hoped that the methodology
described in this study may be useful in the clinical
setting.
