Einkenni um kæfisvefn eru algeng bæði meðal
barna og fullorðinna. Ef gert er ráð fyrir að
lágmarkstíðni kæfisvefns meðal fullorðinna
sé á bilinu 1,3-2,5% þá eru að minnsta kosti
1000-2000 kæfisvefnssjúklingar hérlendis.
Því til viðbótar eru tvisvar til fjórum sinnum
fleiri sem eru með veruleg kæfisvefnseinkenni.
Meðal barna er málið nokkru flóknara en gera
má ráð fyrir að 500-800 börn hafi marktækar
öndunartruflanir í svefni. Þegar haft er í
huga hve afdrifaríkar afleiðingar kæfisvefn
getur haft á líðan, starfsgetu og lífshorfur, má
ljóst vera að greining og meðferð kæfisvefns
ætti að vera eitt af forgangsverkefnum
heilbrigðisþjónustunnar í baráttunni við
langvinna sjúkdóma.
