In 1964 he completed licence-ès-lettres in history and sociology at the University of Paris (la Sorbonne) and Dr.phil. degree in history at the University of Iceland in 1990. Loftur has taught history and sociology at different school levels, most of the time at the University College of Education, later called Iceland University of Education. His main research fields are social history, cultural history and the history of education.
