(see chapter II, section 2). When compared with MskMS, the interpolations thus shared by F and the y-class are seen to be identically abbreviated, and it seems evident that they must have been drawn from a eommon source (MskY). The latter may have been either an abbreviated text of Msk. or a text of Hkr. which was already interpolated from Msk. There are a few instances where MskY has preserved what are probably original readings while MskMS, H-Hr. and/or YFlb. have eommon alterations. These in- stances are interpreted as evidence that MskMS, H-Hr. and YFlb. are derived from Msk2 by way of a eommon intermediary, MskX (ef. the stemma on p. 93). H-Hr. may thus contain text of both the MskX and the MskY type, the latter being drived from the interpolated Hkr. text used by the compiler. 4. Pinga saga. MskY is for the most part an abbreviated version of a text which must have been closely related to MskX. This does not, however, apply to the same extent to Pinga saga, which is an originally independent narrative now only preserved in the manuscripts of MskX and MskY. The lost original must have been revised in both MskX and MskY, but the latter version seems to have retained certain primary features which have been altered in the former. Pinga saga as it appears in the H-Hr. redaction (MskX text) differs considerably from MskMS in two cases: one of these is undoubtedly due to alteration in the H-Hr. redaction, but the con- clusion of the saga in H-Hr., which is lacking in MskMS, may or may not have been a later addition. IV. OTHER SOUROES 1. Pættir. Porgrims pdttr Hallasonar and Hrajns pdttr Gudrunarsonar are found only in H-Hr. Both would appear to be fairly late productions. Oisis pdttr Illitgasonar has a parallel text in Jons saga helga; the latter is handed down in three Icelandic redactions but is supposed to have been originally com- posed in Latin. The view advanced liere is that Gisis pdttr is an interpolation in (the archetype of) Jons saga, but that the texts in both Jons saga and H-Hr. are revised versions of a lost original form (*Oisls saga ?). The text of the pdttr is mueh fuller m the B-redaction of Jons saga than in the other two redactions; the most satisfactory explanation of this divergence would seem to be that the B-redaction made fresh use of * Gisis saga. 2. Skorter passages. H-Hr. contains a number of shorter passages drawn from a lost *Asmundar saga Grankelssonar, from Orkneyinga saga, from Snorri Sturluson’s separate saga of Olaf the Saint and (probably) from Hdkonar saga Ivarssonar, as well as from S tufs saga Kattarsonar and Jdtvardar saga. V. STYLISTIC REVISIONS A comparison of H-Hr. with Msk. and Hkr. shows in ter alia that H-Hr. has been stylistically revised. Because of the uncertainties attaching to the reconstruction 195
