small marks in an ink of a different color than that of
the text itself: a cross above the comma after gamla
(4:10), after hann (5:7), purpura (6:4), jungfru (7:3), kall-
ade (7:15), mijn (8:13), beidslu (9:11), herbergia (10:9),
elska (11:7), þessa (12:5). Each of these words is the
last on a page (the first ten) in 246, except mijn and
herbergia which are at the first punctuation mark on a
new page in that MS. There is a long stroke after fiorer
(52:10) and hun (57:2), both of which are the last word
on a page in 246. In the same ink, perhaps, is a mark like
an exclamation point opposite the line containing sem
ydar (17:8) and a horizontal stroke opposite the line
containing fudur (32:11)—both corrupt passages in A—as
well as a tracing over of the two /’s in skiolldinn (39:9).
The following is a survey of the orthographic system
of A which is not intended to be exhaustive but merely
to provide general orientation.
The normal mark for vowel length is two parallel slant-
ing strokes, although a single stroke does occur—-þá
(52:16). Length is frequently unmarked (n never), as a
glance at the printed text will show.
