is possible, of course, that the absence of the name in
B at the very beginning is merely an omission.
The name Effuen (A) is also instructive. That the form
with O- (62:27) is only one out of four in B (Gutenbrun-
ner, pp. 15-6, overlooks one occurrence in B, in the heading
to Ch. XIII) certainly indicates a mere misreading of e
as o—the form is in fact one of the few examples in B
of a name which is not capitalized—and supports the
interpretation of Ovide given above. The form Eysteirn
(61:30), as Gutenbrunner correctly observes (p. 16), is a
clear example of the replacement of a foreign by a native
form, but his further remarks are less fortunate. With e
as basic for both texts, how could “der Schreiber” think
he had an East Scand. Osten before him? The occurrence
of the form Estuen in A at this point suggests an original
difficulty with the name. If we then take the forms
EffuenlEffion, with two occurrences each, as basic for the
two MSS, it seems to me very difficult to say which is
really closer to the French Evrains (5404, etc.; vars.
eureus, eurins, enri(n)s, euran, uirains). If we consider the
remaining forms, it seems correct to say that A is not
as far removed as B. We find somewhat the same situation
with the name Guimar A; B shows a number of variants:
Gunner (twice), Gunnars (once), Gunnerus (twice), Gunn-
ver(s) (four times). The French is Guivrez, Guiurez. A
group uiu in a MS might permit a number of different
readings, and if an r rotunda were added, the number
of possibilities increases. The A form is probably to be
explained in that manner, although the name Guiamar
occurs in one of the Strengleikar (ed. R. Keyser and C. R.
Unger, Christiania [1850]), “Guiamars lioð” (pp. 2-15),
which also knows Ouidius (p. 6). The B forms could
have originated in the same way—either from a form
already like that in A, or independently—but were, in
part at least, probably influenced by the well-known
native name. Cantuaria in A is unquestionably closer to
