Here begins the saga of Erex, Arthur’s champion, 3

famous King Arthur in England.)
(B + Chapter I.)
It is the beginning of this story that King Arthur Twas
sitting in his castle (was in a castle) which was called Kardigan.
It was Easter time, and he maintained then still his retainers 4
(+ as) magnificently, as was his custom, so (+ that) no one
thought he had seen such royal pomp. With him were his
twelve wise men and counsellors who daily Trode out with
him (sat at his round table). One of them was the son of
King Ilax, a great champion in knighthood, handsome in
appearance, a man of great accomplishments, not older than
twenty-five when this saga took place. THis name was Erex
(~). He was well esteemed by the king íand queen (~) and
all the retainers. fThcn (there) one could see many Ta good
knight (-^), kings and earls and other worthy men, Tboth
young and old (knights, old and young, who were well-versed
in knighthood), and eager íto show their bravery before
worthy men (to show [it—their knighthood] before well-bred
young ladies). TMany were the worthy women and young
ladies in the queen’s retinue (because all with the queen in the
king’s retinue were chosen of good farnily), and they were
very few who had not chosen themselves a lover (+ whom
[they] desired). Entertainment fwas there to be heard and had
as each one wished to choose (was not lacking there in any
respect [for him] who was willing to see with his eyes and hear
with his ears). Each one spoke to his sweetheart and other
things which one desired (+ and no one declined that).
