clothing (+ and good horses, and there is no lack there now
of gay noise and all kinds of good cheer).
Now when the wedding rday (-y) comes, the name of the
girl is enquired about, as is required in God’s laws, and she
gave her name as Evida, and Erex did not know Iher (his
lady’s) name before (+ then). The archbishop of Cantuaria
joined them in marriage, and this day passed with joy. At
evening the queen leads the lady to bed, and kings Gnd earls
(-H) and bishops and (+ many) other Tworthy (~) chieftains
led Erex, and (+ then) their marriage is (+ also) hallowed
with prayers and all kinds of pomp. This wedding lasted ( +
half) a month with lall friendliness and (-:- ) all kinds of good
cheer. When the feast was over (+ all) the chieftains were
29 dismissed with Tworthy (good) gifts, and no lone (man) went
from there without gifts. But before the chieftains rode away
Walven asks King Arthur to grant (+ him) a week’s delay to
have a tournament, land [that] they would receive hispraise who
won the greatest fame, and the knights would make trial of
themselves (for the entertainment of all the chieftains who had
come together there then—that the knights might make trial
of their bravery and knighthood, and that those knights might
receive their praise who win the greatest fame). To this fthe
king (King Arthur now) consents and invites (+ now) all
(+ men) at íthat [!] (his own) expense. One could see there
(+ now) many a knight well-dressed Twith (on) good horses
and fgold-woven clothes and excellent (gold-ornamented)
weapons. There began there (+ now) a very hard (+ battle
and) tilting, and in all that (+ great) host fof men (-y) no
ímatch for (man the equal of) Erex was found except Sir
Walven—they were equal in knighthood. They Tnow (-y)
bore off fame and (+ sure) praise (+ first) from the king and
queen and (+ afterward) from all the chieftains (+ besides)
and fin addition (also) ffrom all (-y) the common people.
