LE NORD
The Academy definitely adopted the proposed rules.
Section 5 of the rules, which deals with the status of contri-
butory members, has already been referred to above. As far as
the rest of the rules are concerned, the following points may
deserve special mention:
The object of the Academy is to promote every kind of
research connected with the study of the Swedish peasantry,
whether of Swedish, Finnish, or Lappic speech. To this end the
Academy shall cause to be printed among its publications out-
standing works of scholarship. It shall furthermore give support
to important scientific investigations, organize research work, and
arrange for lectures to be held on the subjects with which it deals.
The Academy is to consist of not more than 25 Swedish
members, not more than 25 foreign members, not more than
25 contributory members, and not more than 10 elected honorary
members. Corresponding members may also be elected.
On reaching the age of 70, the working members auto-
matically become honorary members without election, a rule
which considerably increases the possibility of electing new work-
ing members.
The conduct of affairs is in the hands of an executive com-
mittee consisting of 9 members. There are 3 deputy committee-
members. Among the members of the committee at least two
must be contributory members. The committee includes a presi-
dent, a vice-president, a secretary, a librarian, and a treasurer.
A notable feature is the very great influence exercised by
the contributory members. Contrary to what is the case with
the working members, they do not automatically become honorary
members on reaching the age of 70. They have at all times and
in all respects the same rights as the working members, and
are furthermore guaranteed at least two seats on the committee.
The donors themselves are entitled to take part in the administra-
tion of donations.
Works submitted to the Academy for publication are scrut-
inized by a special committee consisting of the secretary and
four working members.
A gala meeting takes place every year on Nov. 6. This meet-
ing is held every third year at Uppsala, every third year at Lund,
and every third year at some other locality appointed on each
specific occasion. All other meetings are held at Uppsala, unless
the committee otherwise decides. The fact that the gala meetings,
