(Swedish Place-Names containing the word ‘hester’). The last-
mentioned work forms the first part of a series entitled “Studier
till en svensk ortnamnsatlas, utgivna av Jöran Sahlgren” (Pre-
liminary Studies for a Swedish Place-Name Atlas, edited by
J. S.).
On October 9, 1935, the executive committee of the Academy
appointed a special committee consisting of H. Geijer, C. W.
von Sydow, J. Götlind, and J. Sahlgren charged with drawing
up a petition to the Government for a grant to be devoted to
the publication of Swedish folk-tales. The same committee was
entrusted with the task of bringing out, if possible before the
end of the year, one volume of the folk-tales collected by Gunnar
Olof Hyltén-Cavallius, the original MS of which is preserved
in the Royal Library of Stockholm.
This committee, known as “The Folk-Tale Committee,” whose
chairman was J. Sahlgren, and whose secretary was Dr. Sven
Liljeblad, set to work at once. In 1937 appeared the first part
of a work planned on a large scale and entitled “Svenska sagor
och ságner” (Swedish Tales and Legends). This volume contains
tales from Smáland recorded, and in part composed, by a crofter
by the name of Mickel of Lánghult. The editors were J. Sahlgren
and S. Liljeblad.
During the next year appeared the second volume: “Sven
Sederströms sagor” (The Tales of Sven Sederström), edited by
J. Sahlgren and S. Liljeblad. These tales, which were printed
from the original notes of Sederström, had been collected in Smá-
land and Bleking by the latter and given into the keeping of
G. O. Hyltén-Cavallius.
In 1939 appeared volume 3: “Sagor frán Smáland uppteck-
nade av prosten Carl Fredrik Hyltén-Cavallius och andra” (Tales
from Smáland, recorded by the Rev. Carl Fredrik Hyltén-Caval-
lius and Others). This volume was also edited by Sahlgren and
Liljeblad.
The fourth volume: “Sagor ur G. O. Hyltén-Cavallius’ och
Georg Stephens’ samlingar, utgivna av J. Sahlgren och S.
Liljeblad” (Tales from the Collections of G. O. Hyltén-Cavallius
and Georg Stephens, edited by J. S. and S. L.) did not appear
till 1942.
When Dr. Liljeblad left Sweden for the United States in
order to pursue folkloristic studies among the Indians of North
