accuracy. Dr. Levander’s book will become an indispensable
work of reference both for antiquarians, philologists, and students
of cultural history.
On October 20, 1937, the committee of the Academy decided
to take the lead in promoting a scientific undertaking of gigantic
proportions. For some time plans had been entertained for the
publication of an atlas of Swedish folk culture in four parts:
one linguistic, one folkloristic, one ethnological, and one devoted
to place-names. A substantial grant was subsequently obtained
from the State Lottery Fund. As editors of each of the four parts
were appointed respectively Natan Lindqvist, Áke Campbell,
Sigurd Erixon, and Jöran Sahlgren. As mentioned above, one
volume containing preliminary work for the part of the atlas
dealing with place-names had already been published in the series
brought out by the Academy. Of the atlas itself, no volume has
as yet appeared.
Ever since its foundation, the Academy has intended to bring
out standard editions of the whole Swedish folk-literature. Men-
tion has already been made of its publications of folk-tales. On
Nov. 6, 1938, the Academy took another important step to-
wards the realization of this object in appointing a committee
charged with the publication of folk-ballads. This committee
consisted of Secretaries of State K. G. Westman and Ernst Wig-
forss, and Professors Otto Andersson, C. W. von Sydow, S. Ek,
and J. Sahlgren. Later on the place of Otto Andersson was taken
by E. Noreen, who was appointed editor-in-chief of the projected
work. The first volume of “Svenska folkvisor” (Swedish folk-
ballads), which contains P. A. Sáve’s collection of ballads, will
probably appear in the autumn of 1943 or the spring of 1944.
The first part of “Svenska gátor” (Swedish Riddles), which
consists of Helmer Olsson’s “Folkgátor frán Bohuslán” (Folk-
Riddles from Bohuslán), is expected to appear about the same
time.
In addition to the ethnological periodical already mentioned,
there now also appears, since 1940, a review devoted to place-
name studies under the name of the Academy: in that year the
latter resolved to support the “Namn och bygd. Tidskrift för
nordisk ortnamsforskning.” (Names and Settlements. Review of
Scandinavian Place-Name Studies).
The Annual of the Academy, which bears the title of “Saga
och Sed” (Legend and Custom), and which has appeared since
