years which have elapsed since the foundation of the society may
not be out of place.
The equipment provided for the agents of the Society com-
prises a collection of educational publications and a technical ap-
paratus. The publications comprise, among other things, a series
of text-books prepared for the information work abroad, a large
publication entitled Danmarks Kultur ved Aar 1940 (Danish
Civilization in 1940) in eight volumes, also prepared by the So-
ciety, and a volume of pictures from Denmark.
The text-book series, entitled Grundboger til Brug for Op-
lysning om Danmark (Text-books for the Diffusion of Know-
ledge of Denmark Abroad), aims at describing all Danish activi-
ties likely to interest the public of other countries. At the present
time the series comprises the following publications, varying in
size from 120 to 200 pages:
A detailed account of the cultural achievements of the Da-
nish people at large is given in Den danske Folkebojskole (The
Danish Folk High School), Den danske Andelsbevœgelse (Co-
operation in Denmark), Danske Folkebiblioteker (Danish Popu-
lar Libraries), Den danske Bonde- og Arbejderbevægelse (The
Danish Farmers’ and "Workers’ Movement), Den danske Hus-
mandsbevægelse (The Danish Small-Holders’ Movement), and
Kvindens Stilling i det danske Samfund (The Position of Women
in the Danish Community).
Social welfare is dealt with in the following text-books: Den
danske Sociallovgivning (Danish Social Legislation), Born og
Gamle i det danske Samfund (Children and the Aged in the
Danish Community), and Danmarks sociale Arbejde paa Gron-
land (Danish Social Work in Greenland).
Finally, accounts of Danish economic life are given in Det
danske Landbrug (Danish Agriculture), Dansk Sofart og Red-
ningsvæsen (Danish Shipping and Salvage Services),’1') Danmarks
Industri (Danish Industries),"") Dansk Fiskeri og Havforskning
(Danish Fisheries and Oceanographic Exploration), Dansk Uden-
rigshandel (Danish Foreign Trade), and Dansk Ingeniorvirke i
Udlandet (The Work of Danish Engineers Abroad).
When these subjects have been taken up first, it is because
it is felt that activities in these fields during the last few gene-
rations have been particularly important and are especially cha-
racteristic of the Danish outlook and national tradition. Further-
