ABSTRACT
This article presents a study on the passive vocabulary size of upper secondary
school students in Iceland who are about to finish their English studies. The 715
participants in the study came from seven schools of different sizes and from differ-
ent areas in Iceland. The purpose of the study was to find out whether the vocabulary
size of the students was compatible with what lexical research has established as
criteria for adequate vocabulary size at this level. The instrument used was a
vocabulary test in the form of lists composed of English words and nonsense words.
The findings of the study indicate that the students who take only the obligatory
courses in English have on average not acquired the lexical knowledge necessary to
cope with reading texts in English at university level.
