SUMMARY
Two hundred and sixty one legal steriliza-
tions through laparoseope were done at the
Akranes Hospital 1973 to 1976. The material
was not selected; the operation was done on
every patient, who requested it and had legal
rights. There were no serious complications
in the operation nor in anesthesia, and the
procedure was successful in all cases, except
in three, where the coaggulation instrument
was out of order. The operations were easy
in more than 90%. Three women became
pregnant in spite of the operation, one be-
cause of unsatisfactory pre-op examination
(pregnant hefore the operation), and the
second because of technical difficulties due
to inexperience at the beginning. Most were
discharged the day after the operation. Our
experience is that most of the operations can
be done on oupatient basis if the recovery is
acceptable at the hospital and home. A ques-
tionary was sent to all the women of which
77% were returned completed. Menstruations
became irregular in 12%, where 80% were
older than 36 years. Sexual life became better
in 31% and the mental state in 25%, but in
very few it worsened, which in many cases
is due to other reasons. The great majority
of women were satisfied with the operation.
